I’m sorry & sad that this is happening. As someone in healthcare, it’s horrifying to see the effects of this administration on the people who are the most vulnerable. Thanks for explaining and breaking it down why the tariffs are hurting small businesses for someone who doesn’t know that space!
So appreciate this take. As a new, small brand. The tariffs are not only crushing, the constant changes in policies makes is impossible to plan and make educated decisions
I'm in the same boat this week! Just got a shipment from Peru, with which US has a free trade agreement, and got a massive, unexpected duty bill. I've disputed it, but there is an up to 3-month wait time to know the actual COG on sweaters I've decided the MSRP for. I use a fully US supply chain for some of my pieces, but like you said, the US is not set up to manufacture textiles and clothing. I end up paying the price for US-made goods in inconsistent quality, late deliveries, and insane/ inconsistent lead times. Even with a potential 26% duty on sweaters, I think import is still less risky than domestic because these countries have the industrial base to ensure consistent quality, timely deliveries, and quick restocks.
ugh mairin i'm sorry. it's frustrating all around and doesn't help even the shipping companies don't really know how to handle all of this. the package that kicked off this post is *still* in limbo with UPS + will get shipped back next week if they don't get back to me. hopefully it all works out or at the very least the supreme court has ruled the tariffs unconstitutional by then.
“Corporate greed might have been the initial reason for the shift, but the American consumer has helped keep it there.” - THIS x 1000. Thank you for writing. I’m going to repeat that line every time somebody quotes that meme about how corporations are most responsible for the declining economy, climate etc. Yes, and: that doesn’t excuse our responsibility as American consumers to take accountability for what we can and change our habits where we can.
“Tariffs however will make it harder to accessibility goods, broadening the divide between those who can afford and those who cannot.” This really highlights how macroeconomic policy filters down into micro-level experiences, particularly for small businesses owners in the running space. These perspectives on the rippling effect of tariffs are really appreciated.
As a small brand owner this is worrying. We were lucky enough to have our stock delivered to the US just before the tariffs came into effect! However we are yet to find out how this will impact on our next order as our suppliers are also based out in Vietnam and Sri Lanka. We also made this decision due to the manufacturers advanced capabilities and technical expertise. We may also have to consider manufacturing within the US but need to explore this option further.
hopefully there'll be a final court ruling that deems all of the tariffs unconstitutional before you have to place a reorder. the one thing my republican-since-birth economics professor brother and i agree on is that the tariffs hurt more than they harm and the responsibility of congress to approve. hopefully the courts feel the same way.
Thanks for sharing, every small one is struggling now, we used to work with running clubs from the US and now it is a complete mess, we've had multiple shipments returned to us, we are now working on a way to stock inventory in the us to avoid having this troubles, but we are afraid on how much this will raise our prices

Huge respect to you for continuing to navigate and articulate this madness! Thank you
